Welcome

"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." (L. P. Hartley)

Despite Hartley's wry observation, h
istory is no arcane place. The power of the past lies not in its strangeness, but in familiarity. History provides powerful context to modern debates around sexuality, because history isn’t just a story, it’s a heritage.

Whores of Yore is a sex-positive, inter-disciplinary, research project and archive, dedicated to exploring the history of human sexuality and challenging shame and stigma. Featuring regular submissions from academics worldwide, and thousands of supporters, we hold a treasure trove of resources right your fingertips.

Dr Kate Lister started the Whores of Yore project in 2016. The archive provides a platform for academics, activists, sex workers, and archivists to share their experiences, research and stories around sexuality and sexuality studies.
The website and social media feeds bring images, anecdotes, documents, trivia and cutting edge research to the incurably curious; providing a platform for academics, sex workers, activists and the general public to engage, debate and crowd source knowledge exchange.  The website provides a space where leading academics, activists, archivists and sex workers can submit articles, images, podcasts and signpost their research.

We are in a process of continual growth and expansion - so, if you would like to add your voice and / or research to the archives, please fill out the contact form.
