Richard Newton (d.1798) was an English caricaturist, whose short lived, bur brilliant, career left us this wonderful progress of a sex worker in eighteenth-century London. The style of progression is reminiscent of William Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress, Marriage a la Mode, Industry and Idleness and A Harlot’s Progress. Newton gives us a glimpse into the trials and tribulations of a woman of pleasure with a sense of wit and concern for his subject. Newton died aged only twenty one of Typhus.
